While we were displeased on initially hearing the news as well, it really got us thinking. We feel that even if GM did want to kill the nickname, it would never be possible. The name “Chevy” is an iconic phrase that has decades of references in American pop culture. There are more references to Chevy throughout American music, television, and radio than any other car manufacturer. Just show me one song that references a Honda Accord (Note: You don’t actually have to show this to me, I’m sure there’s some obscure video on the internet where a Honda Accord is referenced, but you know what I’m saying.) From the legendary Don McLean right down to Dr. Dre, everyone uses the Chevy Nickname…and that’s kind of the point. Nobody ever seems to want a nickname, but they stick. That’s what nicknames do. You think that our service manager here at Heinrich Chevrolet really wants to be called Pudley? We’re sure he doesn’t…yet nobody is ever going to stop (sorry Paul). Love it or hate it, Chevrolet will always be Chevy.

We’re just happy to hear that they agree…we got nervous for a few minutes there.

Underneath the Silverado body, you’ll find that Chevrolet has given us 11 new frames to accommodate all the different variations of this year’s model (be it extended cab, crew cab, regular cab, 4×4, or Real Wheel Drive.) You’ll find that the new frame is now boxed end-to-end, with uprated crossmembers. This gives the truck a 92% improvement in bending stiffness, which yields a 20% gain in torsional rigidity.  Coupled with a new independent front suspension, Chevy was able to make improvements to both the ride quality and steering feel. You’ll also find that all 4×4 models of the HD Trucks are now ready to more comfortably handle the load of a snow plow due to an updated front axle rating of six thousand lbs. (Which as we all know, can come in Handy given our harsh climate during these Buffalo winters.)

1. Slow it Down.

Slowing down your driving habits will take you a long way in terms of achieving better gas mileage. While it might not sound like the most ideal solution for the lead footed driver buried inside us all, you’d be surprised at what you can achieve by driving a little more conservatively. Test it out for a week. Accelerate a little slower, start to break a little sooner, and drive the speed limit (in reality, driving 5-10 miles over the speed limit doesn’t really save that much time.) After a week, you’ll be surprised at how much you start to save on gas. As a bonus, your more “responsible” method of driving will help to make the roads safer for everyone. We’re not saying to drive 15mph under the speed limit, or to accelerate at a snails pace…just tone it down a little.

2. Check Your Tires.

This one should be a no-brainer, yet is the most often overlooked item when it comes to maintaining better fuel economy. Under inflated tires have a higher resistance to rolling, causing your vehicle to require more gas to keep moving. That 50 cent trip to the air compressor at a gas station could save you tons down the road. The added bonus here? Properly inflated tires will also wear more evenly, helping them to last longer.

3. Fill Your Tank at Night.

Well, it doesn’t have to be at night, but you should fill your tank at the coolest time of the day. Gas is denser at cooler temperatures. Keeping in mind that gas pumps measure by volume of gasoline and not by density of fuel concentration, you can save a extra few bucks just by switching up what time of the day you fill up. If you are filling up at night, be sure to bring a flashlight, so you can still easily check your tires as mentioned above.

4. Turn Off Your A/C.

Having the air conditioning constantly running increases your gas consumption. In the summer months, you’re actually better off with the windows down (note: having the windows down decreases gas mileage as well, but it’s still better than running your A/C.) If you can’t live with the windows down, you can at least help to reduce the load of your A/C by parking in the shade when available, or leaving the windows slightly cracked when you’re not in the vehicle.

5. Clean Out Your Car.

If it’s been a while, take a look around and see if there’s anything you can clean out of your car. You would be surprised at how quickly the items you leave in your vehicle add up in weight. Removing 40-50lbs out of the car will go a long way. This one is doubly important for anyone playing in a bowling league.

6. When Possible, Avoid Idling.

Whenever your car is idling, you’re burning gas and achieving 0MPG. If you’re conscious of it, you’ll find a lot of times when you can shut the car off. Stuck in line at a drive-thru? Waiting for the kids to come out of school? Turn the engine off.

7. Been awhile? Get a tune-up.

A well maintained vehicle will always get the best gas mileage. Replacing your spark plugs/wires or replacing your air filter will help your vehicle to stay in optimal operating condition, which in turn will help you to obtain the best gas mileage you possibly can.

8. Plan Your Trips.

If you’ve got the time, have your trips well planned out. Whether you can figure out how to avoid traffic, or figure out how to make as few trips as possible, having a well planned out drive will help to eliminate wasted miles and gas consumption.

9. Cruise Control is Your Friend.

If you’re anything like us, you tend to vary your speed quite a bit while driving. This isn’t exactly the best way to drive. Maintaining a constant, steady pace will help you to get the most out of your tank. Cruise Control can be perfect for this, but do be mindful of the terrain your driving on. If you’ll be traversing a lot of upward and downward slopes, you’ll be better off without the cruise control. But if you’re going 60mph on a flat surface? Take a load off.

10. Use The Highest Gear Possible.

Cars are designed to start in the lowest gear because that’s where they have the most power. Unfortunately, that’s also where they use the most fuel. Whether you have a manual transmission, or a shift option on your automatic, try to stay in the highest gear you can in order to achieve the best gas mileage.

1. Always Wash Your Car in a Shaded Area.

Next time you wash your car, pull it into a shaded area. Washing your car in the sun causes the soapy water to dry too quickly, leaving unwanted spots and water marks on your vehicle’s exterior.

2. Start at the Top, Work to the bottom.

When washing your car, it’s best to start at the top. If you start at the bottom, the dirty water from upper areas of the car will travel downwards and soil the lower areas of the car. Also, the rocker panels and areas around your tire tend to pick up the most dirt. Starting at the top eliminates the chance of your sponge picking up dirt from the bottom of the car and scratching your finish.

3. Don’t Use Dish Soap.

It’s a common misconception that dish soap is safe to use on your vehicle’s exterior. Dish soap is a powerful detergent that will remove everything from the exterior of your car, including the polymers that help keep paint looking new. Dish Detergent also speeds the oxidation process of your vehicle’s exterior, causing it to look faded and dull more quickly. You’re much better off using a diluted car wash mixture that can be found at any local auto parts store.

4. Wash Your Door Sills.

One of the biggest tricks to keeping your car looking like new is to pay attention to the details. Door sills are often overlooked when washing a vehicle, but washing these will help restore that new car look to your vehicle. It doesn’t sound like much, but trust us – keeping the inside of the door seam clean adds a lot to the overall feel of your car cleaning efforts.

5. Clean Your License Plate.

Another item often overlooked when cleaning your car is the license plate. Nobody wants a rusty license plate to stand out against a freshly washed car. License plates tend to oxidize and rust very easily over the winter months. This can be solved by simply wiping them down with WD-40. Not only will this cause them too look clean and shiny, it will also remove light rust that has built up. It also helps to protect them from rusting in the future.

6. Use Newspaper on the Windows.

Keeping your windows and mirrors clean is another step towards retaining the new car feel. Rather than using paper towels when cleaning these, take a balled up piece of newspaper and wipe off the window solvent in a circular motion. This will result in a completely streak free finish.

7. Skip the Armor All.

While there is something to be said about the wet glossy look that Armor All lends to a car’s interior, it ends up causing your vehicle to get dirty quicker. Armor All attracts a lot of dust that builds up over time. You’re better off just wiping your interior plastics down with a mild detergent, and drying them to give your interior a more modern matte finished look.

8. Get Those Hard to Reach Places.

Getting in all the little hard to reach places of your interior helps to keep your vehicle looking new. When trying to get these areas, cotton swabs, toothbrushes, and paint brushes can be your best friend. A soft paint brush is especially helpful when trying to clean textured dashboards, as it gets into all the areas that just wiping with a terry cloth can not.

9. Kill the Odors.

A good trick to help your car smelling fresh and clean is done with a dryer sheet. Tear a dryer sheet in half and put a piece under each of the vehicle’s front seats. Leave it in there for a day or two to keep your car smelling freshly cleaned. Repeat when needed.

10. Buying a Chamois is Worth It.

Nobody wants water spots on the car after their car wash. A chamois is the best way to keep this from happening. It also doesn’t leave any small fibers on the car like a towel does.

Starting in Outwater Park, and ending here at Heinrich Chevrolet, the parade lasted for 2.7 Miles and was escorted by the both the NYS Troopers and the local Lockport police (both also driving Chevy Trucks!). All sorts of Chevy drivers were in attendance, with participants traveling from over 8 hours away to attend.

We gave out prizes and awards after the parade. Prizes were given out to the following vehicles…

MOST MILES: The truck with the most miles on it was a 1995 Silverado HD owned by Jeanne Young, with 238,000 miles on it.

LEAST MILES: The truck with the least miles on it was a 2010 Silverado owned by Everett Bryer, who had only 32 miles on his truck.

MOST UNIQUE: The award for most unique truck went out to Bill Cummings, in the role of “Shamrock the Leprechaun”. He came out dressed as a leprechaun, handing out candy to the children from his “pot of gold”. His green 2005 Chevy Silverado fit the part, with a gold coin & shamrock mural painted across the side and back of it.

MOST ACCESSORIZED: the award for most accessorized truck went to Justin Ribbeck from Akron, NY. His 2008 Silverado 2500HD Diesel was outfitted with a 7” BDS life, 37” Tires, 17” weld rims, MBRP Exhaust, Window Tint, Custom Decals, Custom Lightbars, Neons & LED lighting, an S&B Intake, a turbo boost control, and much more. And as he put it, “it’s still under work”.

DISTANCE: An award was also given out for the parade member that traveled the furthest to attend the event. This award went to Dennis Mastie, who drove a black 2004 Silverado SS all the way here from Alexandria, VA.

Heinrich donated $10 to Niagara Hospice for every truck that participated. We also sold food, shirts, hats and basket raffle tickets after the parade, with all of the proceeds being donated to Hospice. All in all, we managed to raise $5042 for Hospice!
